The Decision To Home School

The decision to home school their children is not made lightly by parents; it is usually made because parents believe that teaching their children at home will give them the best education possible. The decision to home school is often based on the belief that their child’s learning progress might be hindered by such things as peer pressure, bullying and the social inequality. For other parents, the decision is made through a desire to provide their children with Christian based home schooling. Home schooling enables parents to instill their own beliefs, views and family values into their children instead of leaving them open to the uncertain influences of strangers.

Home School As A Structured Environment

Some students attending main stream schools might dream of home schooling as a way of breaking out of the mould of structured schooling. The reality is, however, that home school must maintain some rigidity and a regular timetable in order to be effective. The home school environment is free of the many distractions children experience when attending main stream schools but being taught at home has its own distractions which must be avoided. Home schooling allows for flexibility but, to succeed and keep the educational progress on schedule, there must be discipline and a proper timetable to lend structure to the days and weeks of the school term.

Home School Education And Your Child’s Learning Curve

Each child learns different skills and ideas at a different pace. A child might excel at one subject but require extra tuition and a longer time to learn another subject. In a public or private school, the child will be under pressure to keep up in some subjects whilst held back from progressing in others. It is inevitable that schools will cater for the mid-range students. In a home school environment, however, the child can be allowed to learn each subject at their own pace.

Home School – The Disadvantages Of Isolation

Te main disadvantage of the home school environment is that the students can miss out on the chance to interact with people outside their own family members. Exposure to external beliefs, cultures and ideas is an important part of any child’s development. Whilst parents might wish to protect their children from some external influences, the children must be taught about such things as part of becoming a well-rounded adult with the ability to make informed decisions. The home school environment will not be capable of creating social skills in children such that they will be comfortable in the company of strangers. For children to grow up feeling at ease in society, they need the chance to interact with other members of society at a young age.

The problem of isolation can be solved by enrolling children in clubs where they can participate in social activities and extra-curricular learning. Many States support home schooling parents by allowing their children to take part in activities such as sports lessons, music lessons, drama lessons etc at the local school. Home school students can also be eligible to join school clubs for a variety of activities including chess clubs, book clubs and music clubs. This can mean that the home school can offer students the best of both worlds.
