Charting Your Home School Daily Schedule
Subscribe To Our FeedYour home school daily schedule for the whole academic year should be planned well in advance. A calendar should be an integral part of your home school materials and should be used to plan your schedule and to record notes of progress and important events. It is a good idea to start by drafting a plan of the whole school year. Your year planner should be annotated with as much information as you feel will help you, but the lesson plans need to be set out in detail as a timetable day by day. Even with careful planning, your home school daily schedule will most likely require a few changes along the way as you face new challenges, but that is to be expected.
Having made the decision to home school your child, you will no doubt already have considered the impact this decision will have upon your whole family, particularly if the child you are home schooling has younger siblings. The home school daily schedule and your family’s schedule need to be integrated so that home school and normal domestic activities can take place in a choreographed manner.
You are not bound to keep to the same term dates as public schools. You might prefer to take vacations during public school term times when fares and accommodation are normally cheaper and resorts are less crowded. The starting and finishing time for the school day can be tailored to suit your preferences and your family’s needs. For instance, it might suit you to start and end the school day early, or to start early and take a longer mid-day break. As long as sufficient time is allowed for lessons to be completed, you can arrange the timetable to suit your family’s needs. The length of time you allocate to individual lessons can be tailored to suit your child having regard to the child’s ability to concentrate for a set period. You can also allocate extra time for any subject which your child finds difficult.
Your home school daily schedule should have built in flexibility to allow for unforeseen events or outside demands upon your time. One advantage of home schooling is that your child needs never miss any lessons through illness or transport problems. If your child is unwell, the lessons can be postponed to another day; this is a great advantage over the public school system where a missed lesson is gone forever.
